Patience Is A Virtue

Out with the old, in with the new. When it comes to mattress shopping, people expect near instant gratification. We value sleep greatly, as it can ultimately be the deciding factor of how well our day goes. Breaking in your mattress is an important process on the journey to great sleep.

That’s why it is very important to understand that breaking in your mattress is a vital part of your new purchase.

Why Do I Need To Break My Mattress In?

You hear it all the time that some people become sore and have new aches and pains after sleeping on their new mattress. This isn’t happening because of a poorly made or defunct mattress. Odds are, you had your previous mattress for many years.

After sleeping on it for so long, your body becomes fixated with the mattress, and the mattress becomes fixated with you.

This all has to do with muscle memory. Your body adjusts itself to the environment it’s around, and when there is a sudden change, it takes a little bit for your body to fully adjust. This is why most mattress companies recommend around 30 days for a break-in period.

However, even that long might not be enough for some people. Amore beds offers a 100-night sleep trial, so you can become fully acclimated with your new mattress. If you’re still not satisfied after 100 nights, you can return your mattress free of charge, and receive your money back.

Another contributor to an uncomfortable sleep experience could be your foundation. If you’re mattress box spring, foundation, or bed frame is old and worn out, it can cause your new mattress to feel just like your old one. Much like building a house, if the foundation is poor then everything on top will suffer the consequences. Make sure to check your foundation to see if it’ll fully support your new mattress.

Different Sleep Positions Can Feel Better

When getting a new mattress, your sleeping positions will likely change as well.  Side sleepers tend to have the biggest battle with this.  Some folks are able to sleep exactly on their side, while others are able to shift slightly to their partial side & stomach, or partial side & back.  You really don’t want all your pressure bearing straight down onto your shoulder, so be mindful that it may make sense to adjust your sleeping position as needed.  You should even try leaning against another pillow to help relieve some of that pressure building up in one spot.  Just remember, what works on one mattress may not be the most comfortable position on another mattress.

So, don’t make any rash decisions after purchasing your mattress. Returning it for a different one will put you right back at square one. Your body takes time to accommodate change.

When you first start running or working out and feel sore the next day you don’t just give up.  So, don’t give up on your mattress. Your body is simply adjusting to its new surroundings.

You spent a lot of effort and time into deciding which mattress to go with, so let the mattress have some time to get used to you, as well.

When purchasing a new mattress, be sure to research it thoroughly to know what you’re getting into. Breaking in your mattress is a timely process. When everything finally falls into place, you will love the way you sleep!

  • The foundation is really important in ensuring your mattress will help you to sleep. I loved it when you mentioned it because it has happened to me. I once bought a mattress where the foundation wasn’t level. I tried to deal with it but ended up with sore back the next morning.

Yes I understand the breaking in but I don’t typically rotate my mattress. It is a bed, as long as I can get some sleep its okay. That is the bottom line is it not?

This is interesting, and now it makes sense after my recent Amore mattress purchase. I thought about returning it, but I eventually got used to it and now I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

  • This is a very helpful tip and it is good to know. I thought that when you have a new mattress it would feel like your old one, except firmer. I guess that’s why it needs to get broken in.

The good thing is that after breaking in your mattress, you’ll sleep as soundly as a baby. It’s a worth the process, especially with high quality beds; they tend to take a little extra time because the materials are that much higher quality!

It looks like some buyers may not even realize that they have a great product without giving it a real chance. Another thing is that buyers should read reviews about a product before buying.

  • I love this mattress design. It has a more though-out design, more layers, and frankly a better value than anything else I’ve seen out there that’s also produced in the USA.

I had no idea that your body will adjust to the mattress and that is why there is a 30 day break-in period. I thought it was just so the mattress would adjust to you.

On any newly purchased mattress, you will be using different muscles that are getting conditioned, so if you are experiencing any type of back or muscle soreness, this is likely what’s going on. It’s like running 5 miles without ever running in the last year. You will be sore, but it’s a healthy soreness that will be conditioned with continued use.
The 30-night break-in period is also there to allow the foam cells directly beneath you have not had a chance to fully expand to their designed firmness.
We also recommend rotating your mattress once a week for the first month, then once a month for the first 6 months, and then every 6 months after that is a good practice. Especially if you started sleeping on the mattress right away after unrolling.
