Sleep and Stress

So often you hear about people being stressed out from work, school, taking care of children, or whatever the case may be. But have you ever considered that your stress might actually be from lack of sleep? Sleep and stress actually go hand-in-hand.

How much value do you put on sleep?

People value their time, money, jobs, cars, etc. You have to work in order to make money to get that car you love so much, and you make sure all those things get taken care of and make them a priority. But, have you ever considered sleep should be put in front of all those things? Getting enough quality sleep is crucial in order to maintain all those parts of your life that you cherish so much. Without good sleep you might not perform well in that interview, not get the job, and now you are stuck car sharing or taking the bus everywhere.

Still not sure if sleep is that important?

We spend around 1/3 of our lives sleeping, so it is safe to say that it is a pretty important aspect of life. People are always trying to get heir ‘8 hours’ in every night, but fail to understand that quality is just as (if not more) important as quantity. When you don’t get enough sleep (or enough good sleep), you may become groggy or unfocused more easily during your daily activities. According to a study by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), at least 40 million Americans suffer from various sleep disorders and 60 percent of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week, or more. Most people will most likely say they know sleep is crucial, but why are there so many people having sleep troubles? Sleep problems can be triggered by a numerous amount of things such as:

-Disorders like insomnia or sleep apnea

-Emotional disorders (depression, bipolar disorder)

-Obesity, diabetes

-Drug and alcohol abuse

-Stress

Another disruptive barrier to good sleep can be the environment in which you sleep. Too hot, too cold, too bright, too noisy. These can all hinder your quality of sleep. Also, the comfort and size of your bed along with the habits of a sleeping partner, are all factors you should pay attention to.

Sleepiness also has a direct effect on decision making. Think about it, when you are tired you probably don’t feel like having to use your brain and want to just get things over with as quickly as you can, so you can get back to sleep.  With a well-rested body comes a well-rested mind, and you are more prepared to take on the tasks at hand for that day. Also, it is reported that at least 100,000 car crashes are caused by sleepy/falling asleep drivers.
